A Hindu wedding, known as Vivaha (विवाह; or Vivaaha) in Sanskrit, or Lagna (लग्न) or Kalyanam (कळ्याणम्) is a sacred oneness witnessed by the fire itself. The floor must be embellished with colorful rangoli made up of various colors and rice flour. People believe that rangoli invites the goddess Lakshmi, who is the symbol of prosperity and wealth.

On the day of Gruhapravesam, a kalasha filled with water or milk should be placed inside the house, later donated to someone deprived or in a temple the next day.

As the name suggests, this annual festival reveres Goddess Durga and marks her victory over the deceptive and shape-shifting demon Mahishasura in a fierce battle. That’s why she is also known as Mahishasura Mardini (the slayer of Mahishasura). As such, the premise of the festival is religious. However, Durga Puja is not limited to being just a religious fiesta. It is also celebrated as a post-monsoon harvest festival in some places, where the Goddess is worshipped as the mother-power behind all creation and life. The dates of Durga Puja coincide with that of Dussehra or Vijayadashami, which marks Lord Ram’s victory over Ravana. Unsurprisingly, you can often find a mix of these two traditions in the festivities across India.

When Is It Celebrated?

Durga Puja is celebrated in the month of Ashvin as per the Hindu calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, the date usually falls between September and October. In the year 2021, the festival starts on the 10th and ends on the 19th of October.

How Is It Celebrated?

The Durga Puja festival is a ten-day long affair, out of which the last five days are marked with ceremonies, rituals, and celebrations. Here is an account of how these ten days are celebrated:

First Day: The festival begins on Mahalaya, the day on which the goddess is invoked to descend to earth for her yearly visit to her maternal abode.

10th Day: Dashami is the last and tenth day of the festival when Durga is believed to start on her return journey.
- Highlights: This day also marks the end of the festivities with the immersion of the idol in a river or a large water body. Huge processions are taken out on Dashami as people accompany the goddess to the waterfront to bid her farewell in a vibrant manner.

The word Rudra is mentioned in the Vedas and is believed to be focused on the scary, aggressive and destructive side of the nature of Lord Shiva. Rudra Tandav dance is an example of Lord Shiva’s merciless side of his nature. There are many stories on why Shiva is called Rudra. On Mahashivratri, Rudra Abhishek is one of the important rituals to perform. Devotees must perform Rudra Abhishek in a correct manner and with pure devotion towards Lord Shiva.

Light a lamp(diya) with oil or ghee and place it to the right of the Shiva Ling.
Decorate all the puja ingredients(samagri) as mentioned above in a tray and sit comfortably facing East. Use asana to avoid sitting on the floor directly.
Both men and women must wear clean ethnic clothes while performing Rudrabhishek.
Perform Achamanya, a purification ritual in Hinduism while speaking aloud religious chants like Om Narayanaya Namah etc.
Seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha, Lord Indra and your Kul Devta before beginning the puja.
Offer Bel Patra while chanting OM Namah Shivaya and offer flowers and akshat to the lamp.
Now gently move the Shiva Ling from the ritual area to an open place or tray and place the Linga on a Bel Patra to start performing the Rudrabhishek easily.
Begin the Rudrabhishek by offering some water while chanting ‘Om Namah Shivaya’.
Then gently pour Panchamrit on the Shiva Ling.
Offer Chandan and water.
Offer flowers and raw milk followed by Gangajal or water.
Now clean and wipe the Shiva Ling and move it back to its original throne on a Bel Patra.
Offer Vastra, Janeu and apply Chandan with your right finger.
Light the dhoop, followed by a lamp or Diya and shower Bhasma, Bel Patra, Durva, flowers while ringing the bell.
Then cleanse your hand and offer fruits, paan, supari, laung and elaichi, dakshina etc.
Keep chanting OM Namah Shivaya during the rudrabhishek.
You can also chant the Maha Mrityunjay Mantra.
Perform the Pooja with camphor(kapoor) then do Parikrama and finish the puja by showering Lord Shiva with flowers and Naman seeking his blessings.

When to perform:

You can start Navagraha Pooja on any day but should complete chanting of all Beej mantras within 40 days.

How to Perform:

Perform Navagraha Pooja to start the ritual.
Recite the Stotras on each day of the week as given below.
Donate items as suggested below.
Complete chanting of Beej Mantras as specified in the Mantras section.
Visit Navagraha temple when possible.
Perform Puja and Havan to complete.

On Sunday :

Recite the soorya stotra: Java kusuma sankasam kashyapeyam mahadutim Tamorim Sarva paapghnam pranatosmi Divakaram

Donate : Wheat, or sugar candy

On Monday :

Recite the Chandra stotra: Dadhi Shankha tushaarabham ksheero darnava sambhavam Namaami shashinam somam shambhor mukuta bhushanam

Donate : Rice

On Tuesday: Recite the Mangala stotra: Dharani garbha sambhutam vidyut kanti samaprabham Kumaram shakti hastam tam mangalam pranamamyaham.

Donate: Masoor dal( red lentils)

On Wednesday:

Recite the Budha stotra: Priyangu Kalika Shyaamam Roopena Pratimam Budham Soumyam Soumya gunopetam tam Budham Pranamamyaham.

Donate: Udad Dal

On Thursday:

Recite the Guru stotra: Devanam cha rishinam cha Gurum kaanchan SannibhaamBuddhi bhutam Trilokesham tam namaami Brihaspatim.

Donate: turmeric or sugar

Recite the Ketu stotra: Palasha pushpa sankaasham taraka graha mastakam Roudram roudratmakam ghoram tam ketum Pranamamyaham.

Donate: Black mustard seeds

On Friday:

Recite the Shukra stotra: Hima kunda mrinalaabham daityanam paramam gurumSarv shastra pravaktaram bhargavem pranamamyaham

Donate : Clothes or dairy cream or curd to a lady.

On Saturday:

Recite the Shani stotra: Nelanjan samabhasam ravi putram yamagrajamChaaya martand sambhutam tam namami shanaischaram

Donate – black til (sesame seeds).

Recite the Rahu stotra: Ardha Kaayam maha veryam chandraditya vimardhanam Simhika garbha sambhutam tam rahum pranamamyaham.

Beej Mantra of all Nine planets (Navagraha) – नौ ग्रहों के बीज मंत्र

Navgraha mantras are powerful utterances that can help invite the blessings of the nine planets for the benefit of the chanters.

Common Navgraha Mantra “Adityaya Somaya Mangalaya BhudayachaGuru Shukra Shanibhyascha Rahave Ketave Namaha”

Meaning: This mantra addresses all the nine planets of astrology namely Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu and seeks their blessings for the successful completion of tasks.
